Anger is a necessary emotion; angry feelings enable us to speak out and get our needs met. If not kept in balance with our other emotions, or if expressed inappropriately, anger can also get us into a lot of trouble. An angry reaction can inhibit a more productive response, it can be perceived as confrontational and cause conflict in relationships.

There are often a lot of other feelings present behind our anger. I find it productive to teach clients the many aspects of anger, how to differentiate between this and other emotions, and to redirect misplaced anger.  Coping skills will be learned to identify and express negative feelings before they develop into a full blown angry outburst. Evidenced based practices such as CBT will address the beliefs and feelings behind the anger, and also art therapy and play therapy could be used to explore healthier options for releasing those feelings.
