Are you experiencing symptoms of Anxiety?

Anxious feelings or worries are a normal part of life, and fear is one of our basic and needed emotions. Fear is our body’s alarm system being activated which can alert us to danger in our environment.  Anxiety is the anticipation we get that something unpleasant may be about to happen. However, if you are constantly having fear or worry, this can be overwhelming for your body and can lead to avoidance behaviors (such as finding excuses to avoid school or other environments, or staying in bed to avoid events). Anxiety can look like:

  • extreme nervousness
  • avoidance of situations or places
  • excessive worry
  • refusing to go to school or work
  • anger/irritability
  • physical symptoms such as tightening in chest or shortness of breath
  • panic attacks
  • fear of separation
  • fear of social situations

In some children, we see a response to severe anxiety start to look like OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), which is basically our creation of a routine or ritual to make us feel we have some control over the situations we worry about. Symptoms of anxiety and OCD can be relieved with the use of several treatment modalities including mindfulness and relaxation techniques, EMDR therapy, and CBT. We will work together and create a planned approach that will be most beneficial for you.
